Voice IQ Inc has appointed Don George as VP global business development and marketing. Formerly a global marketing executive in IBM’s personal systems group for the telecommunications sector, he also served as the project manager for deploying a wireless network in the Middle East. George has more than 37 years experience in the telecommunications industry which includes the building of the Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems Company in 1983. He served as its first VP and CFO. KSAT Satellite Networks Inc has appointed Avi Shabtai CEO, replacing Meir Bochor, who had been acting as KSAT’s COO in the interim. Prior to joining the company, he was director of sales in Asia for Gilat Communications Ltd. From 1998-1999, he was VP international sales at MTS Ltd, a development company specializing in telemanagement and call accounting solutions. Otto Richter has been named VP Canadian operations at Soft Tracks Enterprises. He will be responsible for opening an office in Toronto, managing Canadian operations and establishing new partnerships and channel opportunities. He brings more than 20 years experience in providing point-of-sale products and services to the financial market. Prior to joining the company, he worked at the Royal Bank. Embedded software developer for the wireless market, Zi Corp, has made two major executive changes. Current senior VP marketing and sales, Gary Kovacs, has been promoted to president and George Tai has been promoted to COO from senior VP and general counsel. The two men will be charged with continuing the international expansion of the company with a focus on providing intelligent interface solutions to the wireless and consumer Internet technologies markets. Hudson Janisch of the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto has been appointed to the Osler, Hoskins and Harcourt chair in law and technology. Serge Fournier, president/COO at Mitec Telecom has resigned. Myer Bentob, chair/CEO will take over in the interim, but will relinquish the position of chair which will be assumed jointly by Lionel Hurtubise, chair of Ericsson Communications Inc, and Hubert Marleau, president of Palos Capital Corp. Eugene Roman has been appointed CIO at Bell Canada. He will be responsible for leading the transformation that Bell is currently undertaking to become an Internet company. He is expected to bring a new focus that will enable the delivery of top quality IS/IT systems. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has appointed Richard Green, president/CEO at Cable Television Laboratories Inc, as chair of Study Group 9 charged with the preparation of standards that affect cable networks. The new designation for the study group reflects the direction that the cable industry has taken in providing real-time interactive voice, data and advanced video services over cable networks using Internet protocol. Green is a 22-year veteran of the ITU, and among his accomplishments was the chair of an international committee that standardized digital television. He also headed up the group that standardized the international exchange of high-definition television programming. Sheridan Scott, chief regulatory officer at Bell Canada, has been appointed chair of the board and of the executive committee of the Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA). Scott was previously a member of the Finance and Compensation committee and has been representing Bell Canada on the ICRA board since the company became a member in September1999. She brings to ICRA a wealth of experience, in the Internet, broadcasting, telecommunications and regulatory affairs. Psion PLC has appointed Ian McElroy to its board of directors. McElroy is currently president/CEO of Psion Teklogix, the company’s Canadian subsidiary, and held the same position with Teklogix International, of Toronto, until its acquisition by Psion earlier this year. Additionally, Michael Conway has been appointed senior VP and CFO at Psion Teklogix. He joins the company from Call-Net Enterprises where he was VP finance. Prior to that, he was VP and comptroller at BCE Inc. David Douglas has been appointed director of mergers and acquisitions succeeding Thomas Wright who has been promoted to COO at Psion Connect Ltd.
