"Tales from the Front" snags top CBC prizeCanadian NEW MEDIA was pleased to serve on the jury that voted to award the CBC Radio Program & Peer award in the new media category to Web One: Tales from the Front. Other awards included best special for This Morning: Peter Gzowski Memorial Special, program of the year C’est La Vie and best regional weekly Culture Shock. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees. Ryerson builds Kodak series siteStudents at Ryerson Polytechnic University’s school of image arts have launched a new web site with archives of past speakers in its Kodak series of engagements. The site also features corollary material related to the speakers including images, text and audio clips. Supervisor Robert Burley tells Canadian NEW MEDIA that the site should expand as future students – including from a planned new graduate program in image preservation – take stewardship of the initiative. The first phase was launched with funding from Industry Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy. Full details will be available in the next issue of Canadian NEW MEDIA. Museum of Nature to build 3D imaging centreThe Canadian Museum of Nature has contracted Toronto-based Arius 3D Inc. to establish a centre for three-dimensional imaging at the museum’s research and collections facility in the Gatineau Hills just outside Ottawa. The centre is expected to open in January, and will eventually be staffed by three technicians. Support for the facility is being provided by Canadian Heritage’s Canadian Culture Online Program. Other museums, federal agencies and research institutions in Ottawa/Gatineau will also be able to take advantage of the facility. Bell offers prepaid InternetBell Canada has launched a service dubbed WebMinutes that offers users a prepaid way to get online. The service offers local dial-up Internet access from all major Canadian cities and 1-877 access from all other locations across North America. The service costs $9.95 for 300 minutes of access. 1-877 access runs $0.10 per minute. RightsMarket creates email security toolCalgary-based RightsMarket Inc. is now selling a new tool to prevent unauthorized cutting, copying, pasting or even screenshots from email. The software application will also revoke access to documents, even after they have been distributed, according to the company. Pilots of the product are currently underway at a consulting/reseller in Taiwan, a chip manufacturer in Washington D.C. and at the Neterra Alliance in Calgary. Audience building new priority for TelefilmTelefilm Canada will focus on building audience numbers for Canadian television programs, a new strategy from emphasis on the "sheer number of hours" of television the agency previously stressed. In a speech in Toronto on November 20, Telefilm executive director Richard Stursberg challenged an audience of television industry professionals to develop better promotional strategies to boost audiences for productions supported by Telefilm.
