High-tech device ownership related to high-speed Internet access: Decima survey

People who use various electronic devices are likely to embrace high-speed Internet services, a new survey has found. Users of cell phones, laptop computers and PDAs also show a greater likelihood of having a high-speed Internet connection at home and/or at work compared to those who do not.Decima Research Inc. surveyed more than 2,000 adult Canadians in November on their use of high-tech devices and high-speed Internet access, among other things. The research found that 53% of Canadians own or use a cell phone, 15% own or use a laptop computer, 4% own or use a PDA, and 6% own or use both a laptop and a PDA. Cell phones prove to be extremely popular with high-speed Internet-connected users who own or use a cell phone, laptop or PDA. Of those who have home broadband connections, 89% say they own or use a cell phone, with 27% having access to a laptop, 7% owning or using a PDA, and 13% having access to both a computer and a wireless device. For those with high-speed Internet access at work, 90% own or use a cell phone, 30% have access to a laptop, 7% own or use a PDA, and 13% own or use both a laptop and PDA. Decima asked those who own or use a cell phone, laptop, or PDA if they access the Internet using a high-speed connection from another source, such as a school, library or Internet café. Of those that do (22%), 87% have access to a cell phone, 30% own or use a laptop, 4% have access to a PDA, and 8% own or use both a laptop and a PDA. Two in ten (22%) of those who own or use a cell phone, laptop, or PDA say they do not have high-speed Internet access. But they are not total Luddites when it comes to high technology, with 90% of them owning or using cell phones. An additional 17% have access to a laptop computer, 5% own or use a PDA, and 2% have access to both. Internet connectivity registered great numbers across the country (see table). Results were almost identical between men and women. The survey was conducted with a final sample of 2,008 adult Canadians through the Decima teleVox, the national omnibus telephone survey conducted monthly by Decima Research. National percentage results of the survey are considered accurate to within +/-2.2%, 19 times out of 20. Subgroup results have a greater margin of error.
