Most Canadians satisfied with Internet service: CIRA

Canadians are “generally satisfied” with the speed of their home Internet service, according to a new report from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). “More than 80 per cent of those surveyed said they’re satisfied, although just 34 per cent claim to be very satisfied,” the annual CIRA Internet Factbook report, released Tuesday, said. When asked about the Internet bandwidth included in their home package, 78 per cent of respondents said they are satisfied, with half being “very satisfied.” Less than 10 per cent were dissatisfied, the report said. The survey asked an online panel of Canadians about a variety of topics, including cybersecurity. “Awareness of cyberattacks is split in Canada, with only 42 per cent of Internet users reporting that they had heard of an attack,” the report said. Of those who were aware, 67 per cent said they were “concerned about their personal information given cyberattacks.” The report also covered how Canadians access the Internet, finding younger people are more likely to report their smartphone is the device they most often use to access the Internet — with 41 per cent of those between 18 and 34 saying the smartphone is their primary device for Internet use, compared to 21 per cent of all respondents. Among all Canadians, though, 67 per cent use a desktop or laptop most often, CIRA said. Most Canadians reported having multiple Internet-connected devices in their home, with only 11 per cent saying they had one device and one per cent reporting none. Nine per cent have 10 or more devices, a number the report noted is “likely only to rise with the proliferation of smart-home technology and applications.” The majority of Canadians also stream video, with only 21 per cent not watching video online, the survey found. “Among young Canadians (18-34), 92 per cent stream video daily, while only two-thirds (67%) of adults over 55-years-old use the Internet to access video content,” the report said. CIRA also asked Canadians about subscriptions to Netflix Inc.’s streaming service, reporting that 38 per cent say they subscribe to the service, a number lower than other estimates. Of those, 16 per cent “admit to using DNS masking or a in order to access Netflix or other online content only available outside the country,” CIRA said. The data in the survey was collected through an online panel with 1,200 Canadians in February 2016, with no reported margin of error, CIRA spokesman Ryan Hill said in an email.
