Xplore Mobile to launch with data rollover plans

Manitoba customers of Xplornet Communications Inc.’s upcoming mobile service will be allowed to rollover unused data from the previous month, the company announced Monday as it prepares to launch its 4G LTE network in the province next week. The roughly 24,000 existing customers who were migrated onto Xplornet’s network, as part BCE Inc.’s acquisition of Manitoba Telecom Services, will get to choose between two, five, seven, and 10 gigabyte data options ranging from $35 to $65 per month. All plans have unlimited Canada-wide calling from Manitoba and unlimited international texting from Canada, with overage charges of $5 per 100MB. The mobile service will be available on Nov. 14. Xplornet’s entry into the wireless space comes after the company bought six retail stores, 24,700 subscribers and 40 MHz of spectrum from Bell as part of that MTS deal. As part of that agreement, Bell is to give Xplornet “expedited access” to its towers in Manitoba. The deals are currently only available at those retail locations, three of which are currently open in Winnipeg and Brandon. Another three open this week, for a total of five stores in Winnipeg and one in Brandon. Eventually, customers will be able to sign up online, the release said. The company’s website only lists 10 phones, from either LG Corp. or Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.; Apple Inc.’s phones are not listed. Xplornet did not respond to a question about whether its network will support Apple phones. To pay for the phone, the company has different “tab” options -- small, medium and large, with activation credits that cut the price of the phone down. For those looking to pay a smaller amount every month, they pay a higher portion of the phone’s price upfront and pay the rest over the 24 month term, plus their plan costs. Those looking to take on the large tab pay much less, or zero, upfront but pay more every month over the same term period. There’s also a zero tab option for those who want to pay the full cost of the device upfront or who want to bring their own device. The company also said it has roaming agreements with national and international carriers.
