Over 5 billion to have digital ID globally by 2024: Juniper

Juniper Research is projecting over five billion people will have some form of digital ID by 2024, as the Canadian government seeks information on how it can meet its own goals for the emerging technology. The U.K.-based research firm said in a whitepaper this week that is multiples more than the expected 1.7 billion people who will have some form of digital identification document with them this year. Despite this, Juniper said national efforts on digital ID do not necessarily translate to a successful system, pointing to the Finnish example, where deployment did not equate to adoption. Juniper said it anticipates “markets across Europe and North America will be led by the financial services sector and digital driving licences, rather than formal government identification.” The Canadian government is currently developing its own digital identity strategy. In May, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat put out a request for proposals to lead the government’s digital ID strategy “with a vision of an open identity-proofing context,” which is a method of verifying and authenticating users across departments, jurisdictions and devices. The request also asks for the applicant to develop “strategy, roadmap, architecture, and designs for digital identity.” “Its aim will be to support a system where trusted digital identities are used to deliver services to citizens in a seamless manner on any platform, with any partner, on any device,” Sean Sutton, director of public affairs at the Treasury Board, said in an email. The Pan-Canadian Trust Framework, as its called, is bringing together the private and public sectors to ensure the technology can be utilized on a broad scale. Last month, the Digital Identification and Authentication Council of Canada (DIACC), which is the non-profit coalition of public and private sector leaders developing Canada’s digital ID system and publisher of the Pan-Canadian Trust Framework, appointed six board members. That same month, it released its first model for the system. A joint-venture between the big three telecoms -- Rogers Communications Inc., BCE Inc., and Telus Corp. -- called Enstream was previously formed that would allow mobile users to digitally confirm a person’s identity.
