OneWeb partnering with Galaxy Broadband

A London, England-based low-earth-orbit satellite communications company is partnering with Galaxy Broadband Communications Inc. to provide high-speed, low-latency communications services through Canada and the wider Arctic Region. OneWeb announced Thursday, in a release, that Galaxy is its latest Canadian distribution partner. The release did not specify the financial details of the partnership. The company said 30-year-old Galaxy’s existing software-defined wide area network (SDWAN) connectivity capabilities will be expanded and “the partnership will enable a fibre-like experience to benefit end users, offering internet access no matter where users are.” OneWeb’s vice president and business head of global carrier and enterprise, Eric Gillenwater, said in the release his company’s network design “uniquely offers Canada large amounts of capacity coupled with high-speed, low-latency services that will serve to bridge the digital divide across the country – and our services will start by the end of this year.” “I'm delighted to partner with the Galaxy team. They are satellite pioneers and experts in delivering effective communication solutions and together we will be able to offer game-changing service across Canada and the Arctic." Like another recently-announced partnership for OneWeb with BCE Inc. subsidiary Northwestel, its partnership with Galaxy will focus on serving the mining, oil and gas, utilities, construction, and community aggregation industries, “which will bring a range of benefits including improving corporate efficiency, health and safety requirements, asset tracking, environmental monitoring and new operation applications while also helping remote workers better connect with their families and loved ones back home,” OneWeb said. In addition to OneWeb, Telesat Corporation -- which had reportedly bid to acquire OneWeb at one point in 2020 with support from the federal government -- has been endeavouring to connect Canadian communities to broadband internet using its own advanced low earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation called Telesat Lightspeed. Telesat has received more than $1 billion from the government in the process.
