Marie-Philippe Bouchard to take over from Catherine Tait at CBC

TV5 CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard has officially been named the next president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada. Speculation about Bouchard’s appointment began earlier this month. Canadian Heritage Minister Pascal St-Onge (Brome-Missisquoi, Que.) made it official Tuesday, Oct. 22. “Public service media all around the world serve as a precious public asset. As society changes at a fast pace, so must our public broadcaster, continuing to build trust in order to remain relevant to all Canadians,” Bouchard said in a press release. “With my experience serving audiences both at TV5/Unis TV and CBC/Radio-Canada, I look forward to this challenge and to working together with all Canadians, including the CBC/Radio-Canada team, Canadian content creators and other partners, to chart the path forward. Our national public broadcaster brings us and our understanding of one another closer together despite massive distance.” Bouchard was part of an advisory panel appointed by St-Onge to discuss the public broadcaster’s new mandate. She has been at the helm of TV5 since 2016. Since September 2019, she has led TV5 Numérique, TV5MONDE’s partner in establishing the international French-language platform TV5MONDEPlus. Prior to that, Bouchard worked at Radio-Canada in a variety of roles beginning in 1987, including legal services, strategic planning and regulatory affairs, information and digital services, and music. Her five-year-term at the helm of CBC begins Jan. 3, 2025, as Tait’s own term at the top ends. Bouchard is a member of the Quebec Bar and holds a master’s degree in public law from the Université de Montréal. She is on the board of the Festival international de Lanaudière, as well as chairing the management board of the Université de Montréal’s Centre for Research in Public Law. “Marie-Philippe Bouchard is a talented, strong public broadcasting leader with a proven record of transformation. As the next President and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, she brings a wealth of experience to this pivotal time for our cultural and information ecosystem, as well as a solid background in organizational culture and change leadership,” St-Onge said in the press release. “In a critical time of modernization, I am confident that Ms. Bouchard will provide a steady hand and be a positive guiding force for Canada’s national public service media now and into the future.” The press release on her appointment notes she is the first Francophone woman to lead CBC, “bringing a deep understanding and experience in the unique value of public service media and public broadcasting in Canada.” “CBC/Radio-Canada is our place for discovering and sharing stories that embody Francophone, Anglophone, and Indigenous cultures, on a range of innovative platforms,” Bouchard said in her statement. “Our national broadcaster provides us with trustworthy news and information, highlights our creativity and offers us perspectives that enrich our lives, right here in this place we call home.” In a LinkedIn post Tuesday afternoon, Tait congratuled Bouchard on her appointment. "It’s wonderful to see a leader with such deep industry expertise and a strong connection to our organization at the helm," Tait said. "Marie-Philippe, I look forward to seeing Canada’s public broadcaster continue to thrive under your leadership and wish you all the best in this exciting new chapter." Canadian Media Producers Association CEO Reynolds Mastin welcomed Bouchard's appointment in a press release Tuesday. "We look forward to working with Ms. Bouchard to build on CBC’s proud legacy as a champion for Canadian culture," Mastin said.
